About Blackjack Variants

Blackjack Variants is a guide to the many games that share the name blackjack. It explains how each one differs, what those differences do to the odds, and lets you try each game at a table that uses play money. It exists to inform. It is not a way to gamble.

  1. Rules in plain words

    Promise

Each rule is explained with what it does to the house edge, not just listed.

  2. No real money

    Promise

Nothing takes a bet, holds a balance or pays out. The chips have no value.

  3. Regulator sources

    Promise

Rules come from published regulator documents, and every figure is calculated here.

  4. Checked before it goes up

    Promise

Each page is checked against its source documents, and a known error is corrected, not left in place.

What This Site Is

Blackjack is not one game. Spanish 21 removes the tens. Free Bet Blackjack gives the player free doubles and splits, then takes it back with a dealer 22 push. European Blackjack deals the dealer a single card first. Pontoon changes the names, the payouts and who wins a tie. The rules look small on paper, and they move the house edge a lot.

The site puts those games side by side. Each variant page sets out the rules in plain language, shows the house edge worked out from those rules, gives a strategy chart for the game, and offers a play-money table that follows the same rules. You can start at the home page, or go to Spanish 21, Free Bet Blackjack, European Blackjack or Pontoon.

The tables are for learning. You can make mistakes at them, see what the chart says, and find out how a rule changes the result, with nothing at stake.

Play Money Only

You cannot play for real money here.

Nothing on the site takes a bet, holds a balance or pays out, and there are no accounts to open or details to hand over. The chips are play money and have no value.

How We Work

Rules come from regulators

We take rules from the rules of play that gaming regulators publish. Where no regulator text exists for a point, we say so, and any casino-published document we rely on is labelled. The full library, with the date each document was read, is on the sources page.

Numbers are calculated, not copied

Every house edge and strategy chart is worked out from the game's own rules by our own calculations. We do not take figures from other websites. The methodology page explains how the calculations work, what they assume, and how we check them.

Errors are corrected in the open

Rules change and mistakes happen. When we find that a page is wrong, we correct it and change the figure or the wording, and we do not leave a known error in place. Where a figure rests on a rule we could not confirm, the page says so. If you spot an error, write to us through the contact page.

Pages are checked by people

The site is written and edited by people. Each page is checked against the source documents before it is published.

Game Names

Game names such as Spanish 21 and Free Bet Blackjack are used here to describe games.

They belong to their respective owners. Using a name to explain how a game works does not imply any connection with its owner.

The regulator documents we cite are public, and anyone can read them. Each one is linked from the sources page with the date we read it, so you can check a rule against the original.

Images, Sound and AI

The table graphics, the card and chip animations and the sounds are all generated by the site's own code, and the pictures at the top of each page are rendered from 3D scenes we build ourselves. The site does not currently use any AI-generated imagery. If we add some in future, it will be labelled as AI-generated on the page where it appears.

Play Responsibly

Gambling is for adults, and the games here use play money, but real-money blackjack is a different matter.

Our responsible play page explains the age rules, the signs that play is getting out of hand, and where to find help.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Who runs Blackjack Variants?

The site is an editorial project. It is written and reviewed by people, who check each page against the published rules before it goes live. Its purpose is to explain how the games differ and what each rule does to the odds.

Can I play for real money here?

No. Every table on the site uses play money. Nothing takes a bet, holds a balance or pays out, and there are no accounts. If you want to gamble elsewhere, read the responsible play page first, which explains age rules, warning signs and where to find help.

Can I use the strategy charts at a real casino?

Only if the table's rules match the ones printed above the chart. Each chart is calculated for one exact rule set, so a different deck count, soft 17 rule or blackjack payout can change the right play. Check the table's posted rules first, and read the responsible play page before you gamble anywhere.

Where do the rules and house edges come from?

Rules come from regulators' published rules of play, listed on the sources page. House edges and strategy charts are calculated by us from those rules, and the methodology page explains how. We do not copy figures from other sites, and each page states the rules a figure assumes.

Is any of the imagery made with AI?

Not at present. Table graphics, sounds and animations are produced by the site's own code. If AI-generated imagery is added later, it will be labelled as such wherever it appears on the site, so you can always tell which images were made that way.
