Blackjack Side Bets: How Each Works, the Odds and House Edge
A blackjack side bet is a second wager placed next to the main bet. It is settled on its own cards and its own pay table, and it has no effect on the hand you play. This page covers the seven side bets found in regulator documents: 21+3, Perfect Pairs, Lucky Ladies, Match the Dealer, Super Match, Buster Blackjack and Pot of Gold. For each one it shows how the bet works, what every pay table pays and what that costs in house edge. Across every pay table with a figure, the house edge runs from 2.17% (House edge, lowest of the published versions of Perfect Pairs, every documented pay table: 25 / 15 / 5, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh shoe.) to 28.75% (House edge, highest of the published versions of Lucky Ladies, every documented pay table: 1000 / 100 / 30 / 20 / 9 / 6 / 4, 2 decks. Exact count over a fresh shoe.). The main game, under the comparison rules used on this site, sits at 0.62% (Comparison rules: 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17, double after split, blackjack pays 3:2. House edge per starting bet: the average loss per round as a share of the bet placed before the cards are dealt, doubles and splits included in the result. Rules: 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17, dealer checks for blackjack with a hole card, blackjack pays 3:2, double on any first two cards, double after split, split up to 4 hands, aces are not resplit, one card to each split ace, no surrender. The player follows the printed strategy chart for these rules from a full shoe, and never takes insurance or even money.).

What Is a Blackjack Side Bet?
A side bet is an optional wager made before the cards are dealt, in its own betting spot next to your main bet. It wins or loses on a narrow event, such as your first two cards forming a pair or the dealer busting, and it pays at fixed odds printed on the table. Those odds are far larger than the even money of the main game, which is what makes the bets look attractive and what hides their cost.
The house edge of a side bet is the average loss as a share of the side bet itself, not of your main bet. Every percentage on this page uses that basis. A bet that pays at a high multiple still loses most rounds: a figure for the chance of any win sits next to each house edge in the explorer below.
Side bets are offered only where the local rules allow them, and the pay table posted at the table is the one that applies. The pay tables on this page come from regulator documents, listed at the end.
How Blackjack Side Bets Work and What Each One Pays
Each bet below shows one widely documented pay table. The explorer further down lists every table and every deck count.
21+3#
Your first two cards and the dealer upcard form a three-card poker hand. On the base table a straight flush pays 30 to 1, three of a kind 20 to 1, a straight 10 to 1 and a flush 5 to 1. An ace is low in A-2-3 and high in Q-K-A, and K-A-2 is not a straight. Only the highest hand pays. At eight decks this table carries a house edge of 12.89% (House edge, 21+3, pay table 30 / 20 / 10 / 5, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.).
Perfect Pairs#
Only your first two cards count. A perfect pair is the same rank and suit, a coloured pair is the same rank and colour in another suit, and a mixed pair is the same rank in a different colour. A common table pays 25 to 1, 12 to 1 and 6 to 1. At six decks that table costs 6.11% (House edge, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 12 / 6, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.). The same bet exists on 48-card Pontoon decks with its own table.
Lucky Ladies#
The bet wins when your first two cards total 20, and an ace counts 11 with a nine. Any 20 pays 4 to 1, a suited 20 9 to 1 and a matched 20, two identical cards, 19 to 1. A pair of queens of hearts pays 125 to 1, and 1000 to 1 if the dealer also has blackjack. At eight decks that table costs 24.05% (House edge, Lucky Ladies, pay table 1000 / 125 / 19 / 9 / 4, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.).
Match the Dealer#
Each of your first two cards is compared with the dealer upcard. The same rank is a match and the same rank and suit is a suited match. Tens, jacks, queens and kings match only their own rank. On the six-deck table one rank match pays 4 to 1, one suited match 11 to 1 and two suited matches 22 to 1. That table costs 4.06% (House edge, Match the Dealer, pay table 22 / 15 / 11 / 8 / 4, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.). Some regulator texts state these pays as minimums, so the posted table governs.
Super Match#
Super Match belongs to Blackjack Switch. The four cards of your two hands are read together, before any switch, and the bet pays for a pair, two pair, three of a kind or four of a kind. On the six-deck table a pair pays 1 to 1, three of a kind 5 to 1, two pair 8 to 1 and four of a kind 40 to 1. The house edge is 2.55% (House edge, Super Match, pay table 40 / 8 / 5 / 1, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.).
Buster Blackjack#
Buster Blackjack is decided by the dealer hand alone. It wins when the dealer busts and pays more for each extra card in the busted hand, from 2 to 1 for three cards to 250 to 1 for eight or more. A dealer blackjack loses the bet, and the bet stays in action even if you bust. With the dealer hitting soft 17 and six decks, the first table costs 5.42% (House edge, Buster Blackjack, pay table 250 / 50 / 15 / 4 / 2 / 2, 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.).
Pot of Gold#
Pot of Gold belongs to Free Bet Blackjack. It pays by the number of free-bet lammers the player collects in the round, from 3 to 1 for one lammer up to 1000 to 1 for seven on the first Pennsylvania table. The count depends on how doubles and splits are played, so this page shows the pays and no house edge.
Blackjack Side Bets House Edge Compared with the Main Game
The main game, six decks with the dealer hitting soft 17, costs 0.62% (Comparison rules: 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17, double after split, blackjack pays 3:2. The player follows the printed strategy chart for these rules from a full shoe, and never takes insurance or even money.) per starting bet with correct play. Every side bet costs a multiple of that, even at its cheapest.

Exact count over a fresh shoe.) |

The gap has a simple cause. The main game is priced by rules that nearly balance out, and a player who follows the strategy chart gives up a small slice. A side bet has no such balance. Its edge is whatever the printed pay list leaves over: the house edge is one minus what comes back on average, where each paying outcome returns the stake plus its pay. Lower the pay on any rare outcome and the edge rises, because the odds against a rare hand are fixed by the cards, not by the casino.
Why the Same Side Bet Can Cost More at One Table Than Another
The same name covers several pay tables, and the pay table is the biggest lever. Take 21+3 at six decks. The flat table that pays 9 to 1 on every qualifying hand costs 3.24% (House edge, 21+3, pay table 9 / 9 / 9 / 9, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.). The base table with a graded list costs 13.39% (House edge, 21+3, pay table 30 / 20 / 10 / 5, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.). Both are called 21+3, and they play identically.
Lucky Ladies shows the same spread. The first table at six decks costs 24.71% (House edge, Lucky Ladies, pay table 1000 / 125 / 19 / 9 / 4, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.), while a Washington table that also pays single queens costs 5.87% (House edge, Lucky Ladies, pay table 100 / 100 / 25 / 10 / 3 / 2 / 1, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) at the same six decks. Buster Blackjack at six decks with the dealer hitting soft 17 runs from 5.42% (House edge, Buster Blackjack, pay table 250 / 50 / 15 / 4 / 2 / 2, 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) on its first table to 13.22% (House edge, Buster Blackjack, pay table 250 / 50 / 20 / 8 / 2 / 1, 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) on its sixth.
Two smaller levers sit on top. The deck count changes the maths of every bet that depends on repeated ranks or suits. Perfect Pairs on its first table falls from 10.14% (House edge, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 12 / 6, 4 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) at four decks to 4.10% (House edge, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 12 / 6, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) at eight, because in a small shoe the first card takes away a larger share of the cards that could match it. The dealer rule matters for Buster: with the dealer standing on soft 17 the first table costs 7.55% (House edge, Buster Blackjack, pay table 250 / 50 / 15 / 4 / 2 / 2, 6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.), against 5.42% (House edge, Buster Blackjack, pay table 250 / 50 / 15 / 4 / 2 / 2, 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) when the dealer hits, since a dealer who hits soft 17 busts more often.
Best Blackjack Side Bets? Ranked by House Edge, Lowest First
Ranked by house edge, the cheapest figures in the data are these, each for one pay table and deck count:
- Perfect Pairs, table 25 / 15 / 5 at eight decks: 2.17% (House edge, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 15 / 5, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.)
- Super Match, six decks: 2.55% (House edge, Super Match, pay table 40 / 8 / 5 / 1, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.)
- 21+3, flat 9 to 1 at eight decks: 2.74% (House edge, 21+3, pay table 9 / 9 / 9 / 9, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.)
- Match the Dealer, eight decks: 3.67% (House edge, Match the Dealer, pay table 28 / 17 / 14 / 6 / 3, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.)
- Lucky Ladies, the table that pays single queens, at eight decks: 5.19% (House edge, Lucky Ladies, pay table 100 / 100 / 25 / 10 / 3 / 2 / 1, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.)
- Buster Blackjack, first table, eight decks, dealer hits soft 17: 5.38% (House edge, Buster Blackjack, pay table 250 / 50 / 15 / 4 / 2 / 2, 8 decks, dealer hits soft 17. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.)
The word best needs care here. This ranking orders bets by cost and nothing more. Every entry sits well above the main game, and a low edge does not mean a bet wins often: the cheapest Perfect Pairs table pays on only 7.47% (Chance of a win, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 15 / 5, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) of rounds. The explorer below ranks all seven bets and lets you open any pay table to see every outcome and its probability.

Do Side Bets Change Basic Strategy?
For almost every side bet the answer is no. The bet is decided by cards that no decision of yours can change. 21+3, Perfect Pairs, Lucky Ladies and Match the Dealer are settled on the first two cards and the upcard, before you act, so hitting, standing, doubling or splitting cannot affect them. Super Match reads the same four cards before and after a switch, so the switch decision does not change the result either. The strategy for your main hand is the one that fits the game's rules, whatever you staked on the side.
Two cases are different, and both are documented. Buster Blackjack is decided by the dealer hand, and the cards you draw leave the shoe the dealer draws from. The figures shown assume a full shoe when the dealer starts to draw. For a player who draws cards the effect is second order and is not included in the figure. Pot of Gold pays by the free bets collected in a round, so its result depends on how doubles and splits are played, which is why it has no house edge here.
Blackjack Side Bet Odds, Decks and Shoe Composition
Every figure here is an exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe for one round. The method works through each possible set of cards without replacement, so it is sensitive to what the shoe holds. That is why deck count matters, and why removing cards changes a bet. On 48-card decks with the tens taken out, as in Pontoon, the chance that Perfect Pairs wins is 8.01% (Chance of a win, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 10 / 5, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) at six decks, against 7.40% (Chance of a win, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 12 / 6, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) on a standard shoe with the table that pays 25 to 1.
Card counting is a separate question that this page does not answer. No figure here is conditional on cards already played, so nothing on this page says how far a bet's edge moves as a shoe is dealt down.
Where the Pay Tables Come From
Every pay table on this page is taken from a regulator document: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Nevada, Washington State and Victoria among them. Casino rule sheets are not used as sources. Where a document prints a table that cannot yet be read back with confidence, the table appears in the notes below with no figure. The methodology page explains how the figures are calculated, and the glossary defines the terms.
Notes
Tables With No Figure
A pay table can be printed in a regulator document and still carry no house edge on this page. The table may be a scan whose rows have not been read back line by line, or it may belong to a version of the game the figures do not cover, or the bet may depend on how the round is played. In each case the game and its rule stay in view and the number is left out. No figure means exactly that: there is no figure to show, not a figure of zero.
Perfect Pairs
The bet wins when your first two cards are a pair of the same rank. A perfect pair is the same rank and suit, a coloured pair is the same rank and colour in another suit, and a mixed pair is the same rank in a different colour.

Match the Dealer
Each of your first two cards is compared with the dealer upcard. A card of the same rank is a match, and the same rank and suit is a suited match. Tens, jacks, queens and kings match only their own rank. The pay table gives the total paid for each combination of matches.

How the shown figures are made
- Computed exactly: every card combination of the stated shoe is counted without replacement.
- Exact for the dealer's draw from the full shoe. The player's cards and other players' cards are not removed from the shoe (exact when no player draws cards; for drawing players the effect is second order and is checked by simulation).
- Every figure is for a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe and one round. Cards that other players used earlier in the same shoe are not removed.
- A pay table without a stated deck count is shown at every deck count the calculation covers. Where the rule document does not say which shoes the table is used with, the deck counts are calculations, not a statement of where the table is dealt.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is a blackjack side bet?
It is an optional extra wager placed next to the main bet and settled on its own cards, such as your first two cards or the dealer's final hand. It pays at fixed odds printed on a pay table and does not change the hand you play. Its house edge is measured against the side bet alone.
What is the best blackjack side bet?
None of them is a good bet. Each costs more than the main game, which sits at 0.62% (Comparison rules: 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17, double after split, blackjack pays 3:2. The player follows the printed strategy chart for these rules from a full shoe, and never takes insurance or even money.) under the comparison rules. Ranked by house edge alone, Perfect Pairs on its cheapest table, Super Match and the flat 21+3 table sit lowest, between 2.17% (House edge, lowest of the published versions of Perfect Pairs, every documented pay table: 25 / 15 / 5, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh shoe.) and 2.74% (House edge, 21+3, pay table 9 / 9 / 9 / 9, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.).
Which blackjack side bet has the lowest house edge?
The lowest figure in the data is Perfect Pairs on the 25 / 15 / 5 table at eight decks, 2.17% (House edge, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 15 / 5, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.). Super Match follows at 2.55% (House edge, Super Match, pay table 40 / 8 / 5 / 1, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) for six decks. The figure depends on the pay table and deck count, so the explorer lists each version before you compare.
What are the odds of winning a blackjack side bet?
It varies by bet. The chance that Perfect Pairs pays at all is 7.40% (Chance of a win, Perfect Pairs, pay table 25 / 12 / 6, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) at six decks, and for 21+3 on the base table it is 9.68% (Chance of a win, 21+3, pay table 30 / 20 / 10 / 5, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.). Most rounds lose. The explorer gives the probability of every outcome, including the unpaid rounds.
Why does the same side bet have different house edges?
Because one name covers several pay tables, and the pay list sets the edge. The deck count and, for Buster, the dealer's soft 17 rule shift it further. For example 21+3 at six decks costs 3.24% (House edge, 21+3, pay table 9 / 9 / 9 / 9, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) on the flat table and 13.39% (House edge, 21+3, pay table 30 / 20 / 10 / 5, 6 decks. Exact count over a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe.) on the base table.
What is the house edge of 21+3?
It depends on the pay table. The flat 9 to 1 table runs from 2.74% (House edge, lowest of the published versions of 21+3, pay table 9 / 9 / 9 / 9: 9 / 9 / 9 / 9, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh shoe.) to 7.26% (House edge, highest of the published versions of 21+3, pay table 9 / 9 / 9 / 9: 9 / 9 / 9 / 9, 2 decks. Exact count over a fresh shoe.) across its deck counts. The base table runs from 12.89% (House edge, lowest of the published versions of 21+3, pay table 30 / 20 / 10 / 5: 30 / 20 / 10 / 5, 8 decks. Exact count over a fresh shoe.) to 22.73% (House edge, highest of the published versions of 21+3, pay table 30 / 20 / 10 / 5: 30 / 20 / 10 / 5, 1 deck. Exact count over a fresh shoe.), highest on a single deck and falling as decks are added.
What does Perfect Pairs pay?
On the widely documented table a perfect pair pays 25 to 1, a coloured pair 12 to 1 and a mixed pair 6 to 1. Other tables move those pays up or down, and the house edge moves with them, so the posted pay table decides what the bet costs.
Does a side bet change how I should play my hand?
No, for nearly every side bet. The bet is settled on cards that your decisions cannot change, so the main hand follows the strategy for the game's rules. The documented exceptions are Buster Blackjack, which depends on the dealer hand, and Pot of Gold, which depends on free doubles and splits.
Does card counting work on side bets?
This page cannot say. Every figure is for a fresh, randomly shuffled shoe, and none is calculated for a shoe that has been partly dealt. The deck count does change the house edge, and that is the one composition effect the data shows. Nothing here supports a claim about counting.
How does Lucky Ladies work?
It wins when your first two cards total 20, with an ace counting 11 alongside a nine. Suited and identical twenties pay more, and a pair of queens of hearts pays the top award, which is larger when the dealer has blackjack. Some tables add awards for single queens, which lowers the house edge.
How does Buster Blackjack work?
It is a bet on the dealer busting. The pay grows with the number of cards in the busted hand, from three cards up to eight or more. A dealer blackjack loses the bet, and the bet stays in action whether or not you bust. The dealer's soft 17 rule changes the house edge.
Why does Pot of Gold show no house edge?
Pot of Gold pays by the number of free-bet lammers collected in a round, and that count depends on how doubles and splits are played as the shoe changes between hands. No exact method exists, so no figure is published. The pays are shown as the regulator prints them.
